moleskin milers.....               walk on!

The Moleskin Milers are a group of family and friends committed to the fight against breast cancer. There are three main groups of Milers, one in north Dallas (headed by Kathy Chambliss), one in Houston (fearlessly led by Tom Klinger and Jill Russell), and one in Norman, Oklahoma (under the care of Marjy Duncan).

As of 2006, the Milers have participated in five breast cancer walks, including Dallas/Fort Worth (3 years), Cincinnati, and Los Angeles

In these five years, the Moleskin Milers have accomplished some amazing things!

In 2006 alone, the Milers raised over $64,000 to support breast cancer research.
To date we have raised over $127,000!

This money supports breast cancer awareness, scientific research, early detection, and community outreach programs.

Kathy Chambliss

One of the original Milers, Kathy is a five year breast cancer survivor. She completed her first 3-Day Walk just 10 months after finishing treatment! She began the Moleskin Milers with her sister, Marjy. Together they have walked over 280 miles (and that’s not counting the training walks!).

Tom Klinger
Tom (Houston), along with Dennis, was co-captain of the Tent and Gear Crew at the Dallas walk in 2006. Here's what Houston has to say about this year's 3-Day: "This year will be my 4th year as a Gear and Tent crew member and my first year as Gear and Tent Crew Captain. You might say that Gear and Tent is in my blood.  The hours are very long and there have been times when at the end of the day I think even my hair was sore.  But it is worth every sore muscle and blister (yes, crew get blisters too) to be able to be a part of an event where for 3 days you put every ounce of energy and spirit you have in you to help complete strangers who are also doing the same for a cause much bigger than all of us.  Together we make a difference."

Kimberly Arnhold

Kimberly, a breast cancer survivor, joined the Moleskin Milers in 2006 for the Dallas walk. After the event, Kimberly summed up her experience: "it is not a race, it is about what is inside of you, why you are walking, what it means to you." Not only has Kimberly signed on with us again for 2007, but she also has recruited her son Austin to join us! Way to go, Arnhold family!

Rhonda is walking in memory of Christina Yaworsky, who lost her long battle with cancer in 2005, and in honor of Cathy Fair, her aunt and a survivor. Rhonda earned the nickname "Ducky" because of her strong belief that duct tape can fix any problem, including blisters.

Denise Kakas

My personal journey began in January 2004. My mother, was diagnosed with Stage IIA breast cancer. Although she was a regular "mammographee", a large cancerous lump (about 1 inch in diameter) appeared within 14 months. The doctors told her that she would lose a breast, but she never felt that she would not survive this chapter in her life. She was the emotional rock, when my father, brother and I faltered. She would tell us "Everything is going to be OK. I know it. I believe in my doctor, her ability, and my angels and dolphins." That was then......two years later her health, although her body is sensitized from the chemotherapy, has never been in question. Her blood work continues to show no problematic signs. This is the women that I can call my mom.....my friend......my hero! Now.....it comes to me. What can I do for the tens of thousands of women, men and soon to be adults that have not been touched by this curable disease? I have the ability to help.....with my health, time, circle of friends, family and soon-to-be friends to MAKE a DIFFERENCE. Please support me as I take an amazing journey in the fight against breast cancer!

Georgia Curry

Georgia is one of our most inspiring Milers! In 1987, she had surgery to remove a small, malignant lump from her breast; 2006 marks her 25th year as a survivor.  She says: “I am so fortunate that the cancer was detected early and has not returned. With gratitude, I strongly feel a desire to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day and to help raise money so that many will benefit from the research,
education, and screening this event funds.”
